Inside Yoga 172 (4/7/2016)

Ever had the thought, “I am no good at meditation”, “my mind will not stop chatting”, or “I’m adrift in my day dreams” and many more thoughts? Well, if you have, you are doing the right thing!

No one ever said practice of meditation and yoga is easy, yet, through trying your best to concentrate on the breathing, on a quiet mind, and being mindful of what you are doing, you might just find by the end you feel lighter, clearer, more alert and fresh, plus more content… it is the effort which can produce the results not the perfectionist in us demanding complete attention and still mind.

Being aware of how bad we might be at what we are doing – or rather how bad we think we are – is better that a complacent attitude that “I am so good at this, it is perfect”. Meditation is a practice not an instant fix delivering perfection with a little bit of effort.

David Ferguson, writing in the Guardian, says he “sucks at meditation” but explains, as mentioned above, that he has arrived at the realisation that he might be doing it right anyway. It is an interesting read, see https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/03/meditation-success-metrics-mindfulness-mental-health

Remember this – keep practising and see what happens.
