These days it’s hard not to know what time is it is, with phones at hand (in some cases they are glued to our hands), gadgets on wrists, and tablets everywhere, yet many of us ignore what our internal body clock says.

Last week I watched I fascinating programme called “Body Clock: What makes us tick?” on BBC (a Horizon programme). The BBC described the programme: “We all have a biological clock ticking away inside us that governs our daily rhythms. This affects our health as much as our diet and whether we exercise. So what can we do to manage this internal clock better?
“To find out, evolutionary biologist Ella Al-Shamahi locks former commando Aldo Kane in an abandoned nuclear bunker with no way of telling the time – for 10 days. Monitored around the clock by a team of scientists, he carries out a barrage of tests to uncover exactly what makes our body clock tick.
“Above ground, Ella meets two time-starved couples to test the latest thinking on how we can manage our body clocks better. In trying to improve their sleep, and their lives, she uncovers practical advice that we can all take on board. Studies on shift workers show that regularly disrupting our sleep makes us more at risk of diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. So getting to grips with our biological clock couldn’t be more important.”
The translation of yoga means “union”, so if you are wondering what has this programme got to do with yoga, well, a lot is the answer because our yoga practice helps us to connect with ourselves and this means being in time with ourselves and our body clock.
Have a look at the programme and see for yourself: there are some very good tips on how to bring yourself back into time with your body clock, for example, the programmes explains why night owls will need lots of bright sunshine in the morning to help get them get their own body clock back on time. Or, why we sleep so well after a day in fresh air and sunshine; or why turning off devices which emit blue light in the evenings earlier than we probably do now will make a difference to our sleep. Informative… have a look.
The programme is on BBC iPlayer for another 24 days (from 22/10/2018), go to https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bn5ys4/horizon-2018-9-body-clock-what-makes-us-tick
